Ligature (Emoji)

A typographic technique where two or more characters are combined visually into a single glyph — a principle applied in ZWJ emoji sequences.

In-depth Analysis

In traditional typography, a ligature combines letters like "fi" or "fl" into a single glyph for aesthetic or functional reasons. Emoji rendering engines apply a similar concept: when the system encounters a ZWJ sequence, the individual emoji "characters" are merged into a single compound glyph. This is why a platform that supports a particular ZWJ sequence will show one emoji, while an unsupported system shows the individual component emojis side by side.
