A dermatological classification system with 6 skin tone types, adopted by Unicode to standardize human emoji skin color variations.
In-depth Analysis
The Fitzpatrick Scale was originally developed in 1975 by dermatologist Thomas Fitzpatrick to classify human skin types for UV exposure research. Unicode 8.0 (2015) adapted this scale to provide five emoji skin tone modifiers (Types 1-2 through 6, mapped to light through dark). This was a landmark moment for digital inclusivity. Human emojis without a skin tone modifier default to a neutral yellow color, which is intentionally non-representational.
