Technical Term
Regional Indicator (Flag Emoji)
A pair of Unicode characters (U+1F1E6–U+1F1FF) that combine to form country flag emojis based on ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes.
In-depth Analysis
Flag emojis are not stored as single characters but as pairs of Regional Indicator Symbols. For example, the Turkish flag 🇹🇷 is the combination of 🇹 (U+1F1F9) + 🇷 (U+1F1F7). The Unicode Consortium does not define flag emoji appearances — instead, it relies on OS vendors to render the appropriate flag image for each ISO country code. Notably, some country flags (like Scotland 🏴) use tag sequences instead of regional indicators.
